Damaged during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the Nachi returned for repairs to Manila Bay where she was caught in an American air raid sinking on Nov.5th 1944.

On June 4th 1944 Akagi was steaming toward Midway Island with carriers Kaga,Soryu and Hiryu and their escorts . A miscalculation by the Japanese found them unprepared for a surprise assault by the planes of the US Naval force. In the first few minutes nine hits were scored on the Akagi and within hours she and the Kaga and Soryu were sunk.
