more | Revell 1/700 USS Assault Carrier Wasp Class Modern (05062) In 1989 with the USS Wasp (LHD-1) the American navy put into service the first vessel in a new class of "multi-purpose amphibious assault ships"- the official designation of the type. Six more vessels of this class were also ordered. They are designed as successors to the Tarawa class. As regards equipment and armament it is also clear that the ship is primarily a carrier for aircraft and helicopters, typical numbers often being 30 helicopters and 6 to 8 Harrier vertical take-off planes. That may not be as many aircraft as in traditional carriers, but it enables them to take a number of landing craft in a floodable docking well in the stern. The main purpose of these ships is naturally to support navy landings. However the type is not equipped solely to support fighting units, it is also available for rescue and humanitarian missions, like the ships that were used in support of the medical assistance given in the Turkish earthquake disasters.
