Naval Battle of Trafalgar 1805/2005!!
The British fleet won the Naval Battle of Trafalgar 200 years ago!
His Majesty's Ships, particularly the Victory as their flagship, had ever reason to celebrate the 21st october 1805, since they had succeeded in defeating the Franco-Spanish fleet.
However celebrations were dampened because the Victory's Commander, Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson, lost his life on his ship on the very day of the great Victory. The great hero's tomb is in St. Paul's Cathedral, London.
Today, H.M.S. Victory lies in dry-dock in Portsmouth in all her splendour. The whole of England was outraged when it was suggested the ship be scrapped following the Napoleonic wars, so she was reprieved and became the stationary flagship of the commander-in-chief. In 1922 the Victory underwent a comprehensive restoration paid for out of donations. She was the opened to the public as a memorial.

Designed to carry 64 guns the Wasa was to set sail on its maiden voyage in 1628 but disaster was to strike and shortly after firing a salute the Wasa was to sink. The ship was discovered and its remains salvaged in the 1960's and a museum now exists in Gothenburg dedicated to the vessel.

The Trireme is a mediterranean rowing warship, similar to the Greek Triera. Its main weapon was a ram. The ship had a boarding bridge called 'Raven' which Roman legionaries used to get on an enemy vessel. The maximal speed on oars was up to 6 knots ( 11 km/h). Two straight sails served as an auxiliary power source. The crew consisted of approximately 350 people, including rowers. | |
