The Savannah was the first nuclear powered cargo/passenger ship in the world, built by the NY Shipbuilding Corp. in Camden, USA. She was launched in March 1962 and thus demonstrated for the first time the technical possibilities of nuclear powered merchant vessels. However, it was never the intention to be commercially competitive. The Savannah had a capacity of 14,000 tons and could accommodate 60 passengers and a 124 men crew. The cruising speed was 21 knots and the fuel store was sufficient for an uninterrupted stretch of 336,000 nautical miles (622,608 km). For passenger operation she even had comfortable rooms, a cinema, a library and a swimming pool. The Savannah was taken out of service in 1972 and, although the nuclear plant was removed, is still preserved as amuseum ship.
