Originally laid down under the name of "Kniaz Potemkin- Tavrichesky" in 1898, this Russian battleship was commissioned in 1904. With a standard displacement of 12,582 tons, she was armed and armored to be equal to the battleships of the other major naval powers of the time.
Locked into the Black Sea by Turkey, when the Russo-Japanese War erupted neither she nor the rest of the Black Sea Fleet took any part in the war. However, they did suffer the effects of this disastrous war for Russia. One month later the Tsushima battle occurred May 27-28, 1905 and half a world away from this calamity for Russia, the reverberations were made manifest in the Black Sea Fleet. On June 27, 1905 Potemkin was away from the main base and the rest of the fleet preparing for a firing practice.
Outrage about rotten meat on the accompanying torpedo boat No. 267 spread to the Potemkin. The inept handling of the event by the officers was the spark that ignited unrest into mutiny. It soon had erupted into a shooting between the officers and the crew during which the captain and most of the officers were killed. Both vessels taken over by thr crews raised the red flag of revolt and for the next eleven days steamed about the Black Sea looking for comrades or a safe harbour. In the end she found neither. In July 1905 she was turned over to the governmental authorities in the port of Constantsa, Romania.
