Most sailing ships achieved fame through sea battles but some gained it through exploration. On 27th December 1831, HMS Beagle, a barque launched in 1820, sailed from Devonport, England on a five year expedition round the globe. At the invitation of the captain and naturalist Robert Fitzroy, the young natural scientist Charles Darwin was also on board. The observations made by him on the origin of species, during the voyage, formed the basis of the Darwin's theory, a milestone in the scientific study of evolution. The historic voyage via Brazil, Chile, Galapagos Islands, Tahiti, New Zealand and round the Cape of Good Hope ended back in England on 2nd October 1836. Many species were brought back as examples of exotic flora and fauna.
