The USS Kearsarge was renowned for winning one of the longest and most dramatic sea battles in the American civil war. She was launched in 1861 from Portsmouth, New Hampshire and had a displacement of 1,031 tonnes. The Kearsarge was equipped with a greater number of cannon and its steam engine gave it greater manoeuvrability compared with other sailing ships of its era. When the agents of the Union in England learned that the Confederate states had ordered the construction of a new merchant vessel, the completion of the Kearsage was accelerated. It was assumed that this vessel would serve as a warship in order to capture the merchant ships of the Union. The new Confederate ship was launched in May 1862 and subsequently operated as a merchant ship under the name "Enrica". In the vicinity of the Azores, Captain Semmes took over command, had cannon mounted and later displayed the new name: "C.S.S. Alabama". In the following 20 months raids by the Alabama sunk 57 Union merchant ships. Her end came in June 1864 when she ran onto a reef and sank during a voyage in the Gulf of Mexico.
