27th March 1942 - a pitch-dark night over St. Nazaire, France. The specially prepared British destroyer "Campbeltown" (formerly USS Buchanan, built 1919) goes up the Loire under full steam flying the German flag. With small explosions the Campbeltown is run onto the gate of the Normandy dock in the port of St. Nazaire, the only dock in Atlantic water that could acommodate capital ships such as the Tirpitz for repair. The crew are taken prisoner and German officers go aboard to investigate. 9 hours later the Campbeltown, which is packed with explosives, blows up and causes serious damage to the dock that could not be repaired until after the war end. She was thus the largest ever time bomb, the Trojan horse of the Second World War. | |
