Most wooden boat kits require skill and patience to assemble. The easiest are usually those supplied with either a solid or plastic (ABS) hull so the masts and rig are the hardest part. Harder but the most usual form of construction for the hull is plank on frame and that requires the most patience and skill. Always a great value hobby, some models can literally take months to complete.

Building model ships is an absorbing hobby, but it can be even more enjoyable if the correct tools are used. There are some specific tools necessary to do the job, such as a good hand drill with a selection of miniature drill bits, something in the region of 0.5mm and 2mm as a general rule. Small files and wood rasps are very usefull, not just for cleaning up the decorative fittings, but also taking off any waste wood when releasing frames from laser cut sheets. A small pin hammer is a must, and can be used in conjunction with the Amati pin pusher, this clever little device saves on injured digits by allowing you to guide a tack gently into the frame with precision. Obviously a good selection of modelling knives is crucial, and the Expo metal shaft handles allow for a variety of cutting blades to be fitted, not to mention specialist chisels & gouges. Curved blades are best for making straight cuts, whilst a straight blade allows for intricate cuts. Miniature needle nosed pliers allow for manipulating small fittings as would a good set of tweezers. Vices and clamps are effectively a third hand, and a good magnifyer is also important, preferably one that's suspended on a free standing base. Fortunatly Antics supply a fantastic range of modellers tools from Expo. Some are some very specific tools for period ship building, plank benders for example reduce the risk of frustrating splitting or breaking of the often wafer thin planking strips, and the Amati Loom-a-line is an excellent rigging frame for building vessels with difficult to rig ratlines. see our hints and tips page for more info.

Corel Llaut Spanish Fishing Boat (SM044 )

The Llaut or Laud is a craft which is typical of Majorca (Spain) and can also be found in the neighbouring islands of Minorca and Ibiza. They were used for fishing with nets or for catching octopus.

The kit includes C.N.C. Routed�frames for keel & bulkheads, and exotic wood strip for hull planking. Also included is the wooden deck planking, masts and spars,�metal�and wooden fittings,�and cloth for the sails. The instruction booklet is very detailed, taking you through every step of construction.

Corel 1/64 Leida (SM57)

The famous naval architect, F.H. Chapman, in his treaty Architettura Navalis Mercatoria of 1775, sketched and described a small Dutch fishing boat. He finished it off, however, with light and pleasant decorations which transformed it into an original and elegant pleasure boat and gave it the name of A Dutch Herrenyacht. The Leida, too, has its origins in one of the typical Dutch fishing boats of the eighteenth century.

Corel 1/64 Scotland Baltic Ketch Yacht 1775 Kit (SM056)
The Scotland, a ship dating back to the end of the eighteenth century, belongs to the category of the Baltic Ketch Yachts and was chiefly used for the transport of goods and passengers, also on rivers and the most important lakes. While being traditionally a work boat, so-called because it was mainly used for commercial purpose, the Scotland can be distinguished from the multitude of different kinds of relatively small boats, that is to say, those between 50 and 60 feet long, by its impressive sails and the pleasing and soft lines of the hull. Even Chapman himself, in a note dated 1775, mentioned this type of ship because of the purposes for which it was used, but he called it "Galeas, a Baltic Vessel".

Corel 1/50 Ranger American Cutter 1823 Kit (SM55)

The Ranger was one of the typical American cutters built in the first half of the 19th century and basically used for surveillance and coastguard duties. It was armed with a large carronade installed in the centre of the deck that rotated on a circular guideway, permitting rapid fire from both sides of the hull with a single weapon. Note the particular elegant line of the Ranger, emphasised by the depth of the keel at the stern. Given the generic nature of the tasks it performed, no significant events are known in which this type of cutter was involved.

Corel 1/25 Inshore Racing Yacht (SM53)
Inshore racing is yacht racing generally within sight of land or from land to nearby islands, as�opposed to offshore racing across open water and oceans. The duration of races may�be daylight only, overnight or passage races of several days. These yachting regattas are popular in both Britain and America, and allow for different classes and skills.

Corel 1/96 HMS Peregrine Sixth Rate (SM60)
H.M.S. Peregrine was built in 1686 for the fleet of King George III as a sixth rate vessel. Carrying 18 small-caliber cannon, she was too lightly armed to participate in the important naval battles of the day. Instead, she was used for escort duty and to transport important persons and messages.

Plank on bulkhead assembly uses pre-cut plywood. All fittings are finished and ready to use, some parts must be cut from wood supplied. Bow and stern fillers assure correct hull shape, and double planking is done in limewood and walnut.
Brass figurehead, stern ornamentation and photo-etched brass parts are intricately detailed. Armament consists of a full set of cast metal cannon, ranging in size from 11 to 30 millimeters. kit is complete with cannon carriages as needed, gun port lids, silk screened flags, five diameters of rigging line, plans, illustrated instructions.

Corel 1/96 HMS Greyhound English Frigate (SM59)

The Greyhound was a frigate with 20 cannons designed by Stacey, launched from the Deptford shipyard on February 13, 1720. Little is known of its seafaring history, it seems that together with other very similar ships, it was used in the Mediterranean to fight the pirates that plagued the coasts. The results were disappointing because the pirate ships were very agile, and armed with 4-6 cannons in the bow, and confronted the frigates head-on and prevailed.

The H.M.S. Greyhound model features plank-on-frame construction in C.N.C. Routed�wood. The hull uses flexible lime-wood strips for the first planking and dark walnut for the second. Fittings include ready-to-use blocks and deadeyes, blackened metal anchors, brass rods and nails, and gilded metal stern and bow decorations. Britannia metal gunports and lifeboat are expertly cast. Twenty burnished metal cannon on wooden carriages sit on the main deck. Kit is complete with wooden display board and cradle, four sheets of plans and illustrated instruction manual.

Corel 1/50 Flying Fish American Market Schooner 1860 (SM19)

Designed by the famous shipbuilder Jeremiah Burham, the Flying Fish was launched in 1860 in Essex, Massachusetts. For more than twenty years it was the most representative vessel of the Market Schooner class. Thanks to its special construction characterists and the enormous amount of sail it carried, the Flying Fish was one of the fastest vessels of the Gloucester fishing fleet, transporting the fish caught on the famous Banks to the market ports in record time, with obvious advantages in terms of sales and earnings.

Corel's kit features plank-on-bulkhead construction with pre-cut frames and keel. Poplar, walnut, basswood, tanganyka, mahogany, maple and beech are used throughout. Kit includes brass and hardwood fittings, rigging, silk-screened flags and display cradle. Plans and instruction book have been revised for easier construction.

Corel 1/60 Endeavour British Brig (SM41)
British brig, 1768. Length 780mm, Scale 1:60. First exploration vessel for which we still have reasonably accurate data today. She set sail from Plymouth on 26 August 1768 under the command of Captain Cook with 94 people aboard, including officers.

Corel 1/75 HMS Unicorn British Frigate 1790 Kit (SM011)
An elegant frigate, designed for the British Fleet by Chapman at the end of the 18th century. Like the original, our model is armed with 24 guns on the open fighting deck and 8 guns below, all complete with gun mountings and wheels. The sleek and tapered line of the hull and the impressive masts make this an extremely striking and beautiful ship.

Corel 1/90 HMS Neptune British 58 Gun Heavy Frigate Kit 1700 (SM058)
The Neptune, reconstructed on the basis of original shipyard models perfectly preserved in the Greenwich Naval Museum, represents a 3rd class vessel (55/60 canons), which took part in the battle at La Hougue on 2 June 1692, where the English fleet commanded by Admiral Rooke, defeated the French fleet commanded by Admiral Tourville. Neptune has decorations that are typical of the Royal vessels of the period and reproduces the decorative part of the famous Admiral Prince in a smaller scale. The vessel underwent major changes, in the same way as other similar ships: the spritsail mast therefore disappeared and the jib boom was added to the bowsprit, and the bumpkin booms and the yards for the topgallants were added to the topmasts. The Neptune is an accurate reproduction in a 1:90 scale of a classic, fully-armed English vessel of the period - 58 canons - of which 26 on the lower deck, 24 on the main deck and 8 on the quarterdeck. Particularly pleasing from an aesthetic aspect, the Neptune represents perhaps one of the last British vessels so richly decorated of that period.

Corel 1/50 Le Tonnant French Privateer Corvette 1790 (SM50)
The corvette Le Tonnant was a late 18th century French privateer and was typical of this class of ship. Carrying a large area of sail and highly armed with small calibre guns these ships, unlike pirate ships, flew their national flag. This ship should not be confused with the larger 80 gun ship of the same period also named Le Tonnant that was sunk at Abukir in 1798.�

Corel 1/100 HMS Bellona 74 Gun Ship Kit (SM054)
The H.M.S. Bellona was one of the most famous 74-gun ships of the British Navy. The�Bellona, launched on 19 February 1760, sailed to join the battlefleet which was then blockading Brest. On 30 December 1780 the�Bellona took part in the capture of the 44-gun Dutch ship Princess Caroline; then she cruised off Gibraltar, in the North Sea and the West Indies. She was employed in the blockade of Cadiz; then, the Bellona was at Jamaica, at Portsmouth and at Barbados.

Corel 1/98 HMS Victory 1805 Kit (SM023)
The flagship H.M.S. Victory is famous because of one of the most celebrated naval battles in British history, fought off Cape Trafalgar on 21 October 1805 between the British fleet commanded by Admiral Nelson and the Franco-Spanish fleet. Accurately restored in its equipment and the original colours, the Victory is now a museum moored in the dry-dock at Portsmouth.

Corel's reproduction is based on a more correct positioning of the deck superstructures and the external details and the masts taken from the original British admiralty plans. Complete new graphics and a new detailed instruction book in four languages make this a model which can be built by modellers who are not particularly expert.

The hull is double planked in limewood and walnut, with tanganyka strips for planking the deck. All wooden parts are pre-cut to facilitate assembly. Lanterns, railings and other fittings are brass, gilded cast metal and walnut. One hundred cast metal cannon and carronades are burnished for an authentic appearance. Brass gunport frames open and close with hinged lids. Display stand, five diameters or rigging, flags and hammock netting are provided. Fourteen sheets of plans plus an instruction book including directions for building the admiralty version guarantees a faithful replica.

Corel 1/98 HMS Victory 1805 cut away section (SM024)
HMS Victory is a first rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, started in 1759 and launched in 1765, most famous as Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar. She is the oldest naval ship still in commission, and now sits in dry dock in Portsmouth, England as a museum ship. This cross section of the famous ship shows, in detail, how the ship was structured blow decks, and how she functioned as a fighting vessel. Nothing is left to the imagination with this highly detailed model kit. All four decks of the vessel are represented, and even the stowage section at the base of the hull.

The kit includes�C.N.C. routed�frames the mid section of the vessel, and exotic wood strip for hull planking. Also included is the wooden deck planking, mast and spars,�metal�and wooden fittings, and silk flag. Copper hull plating is also included for the bottom of the hull as in the original. The instruction booklet is very detailed, taking you through every step of construction. Assembly is simplified by special tools supplied in the box.
