One of the first German Battleships to mount 12" guns. All the class were present at the Battle of Jutland.
The 4 ships of the "Helgoland" Class were a significant improvement on the first German Dreadnought (Nassau) but retained the wing turrets which limited the broadside to 8, 12" of the 12 carried. "Ostfriesland" was the only member of the class to be damaged and after the war was ceded to the USA and sunk in Billy Mitchell's aircraft bombing trials. "Thueringen" was the last to be broken up, having been retained for training purposes until 1923. | |
