White Ensign Models 1/350 HMS Musketeer Royal Navy Destroyer Kit March 1943 (K3519)
With the J Class, the six(3x2) 4.7-inch Mk XII guns were in open mounts with splinter shielding protecting the front and sides of each mount. In fighting these guns, the crew was subject to the effects of weather and heavy sea. For all of the years since the end of Britain’s Wooden Walls of the sail Ships of the Line, the crusty old admirals, retrenched in the admiralty puffed that having gun crews open to the elements was good for them. It was claimed that this would harden them and make them better than the farmboys manning the guns in foreign "wantabee" navies. If manning guns open to the elements was good enough for them, it was good enough for the new recruits. However, by the late 1930s Japan and the United States had gone to completely enclosed mounts. By then it painfully clear that gun crews in an enclosed mount could concentrate in ranging and firing their guns, free from the obvious degradation of their efforts that would be caused by fighting the enemy and the weather concurrently. Clearly if a destroyer was taking it green, a gun crew would be greatly distracted in their efforts to prevent their being washed away. Additionally, any action the North Atlantic in winter or in the Arctic, would pose significant difficulties to the crew of any open gun.

White Ensign Models 1/350 HMS Janus Sept 1940 J Class Royal Navy Destroyer Kit (K3556)
The J Class started the war as the 5th Flotilla based upon the Humber. They were initially unlucky in their encounters with German destroyers. While on patrol on December 7, 1939 Jersey and Juno were surprised by the German destroyers Lody and Geise. Jersey was badly damaged by a torpedo. In April 1940 they were involved in the Norwegian campaign, minus Jersey which would be under repair until September of that year. They then moved to the channel, where their mission was to intercept German destroyers making mine laying sorties. In November 1940 German destroyers again came out ahead, when two torpedoes struck Javelin. She was out of action for a year. In June 1940 with Italy’s entrance into the war, Jervis, Janus and Juno were sent to the Mediterranean, followed by Jersey, Jaguar and Javelin.

White Ensign Models 1/350 ORP Piorun 1944 Polish N Destroyer Kit (K3558)
ORP Piorun which means Thunderbolt was an N class destoryer used by the Polish Navy during the Second world war. Piorun was built by John Brown & company of Clydebank, Glasgow: she had been laid down in July 1939, launched on 7 May 1940 and completed on 4 November 1940. Originally commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Nerissa, she was transferred to the Polish Navy as a replacement for the destroyer ORP Grom which had been lost off the Norwegian coast on 5 May 1940. She was based in the UK and was commanded by Commander Plawski. On 13th-15th March 1941, she took part in the defence of Clydebank against German Luftwaffe air raids, as she happened to be undergoing repairs in John Brown's shipyard. Many people remembered that she put up a terrific barrage on the first night, which may have caused the shipyard to get off comparatively lightly. A memorial to the crew of the ship was later erected in Clydebank. In May 1941 she was escorting convoy WS-8B, along with four Royal Navy destroyers, when they were ordered to leave the convoy to take part in the pursuit of the German battleship Bismarck. Piorun took part, along with the British destroyers, in the shadowing of and torpedo attacks on the Bismarck the night before she was sunk, and at one point they had an exchange of fire for half an hour. She subsequently operated in the Mediterranean and took part in Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily. In 1944 she was transferred to the Royal navy Home Fleet. She was returned to the Royal Navy in 1946, renamed HMS Noble and scrapped in 1955.

White Ensign Models 1/350 HMS Starling Royal Navy Modified Black Swan Sloop Kit (K3560)
Frederic John Walker was a rarity in the Royal Navy. He joined the RN as a cadet/midshipman in 1913. He proved very able and served throughout the 1 World War. He served on the battleship as a midshipmen up to 1916 when he was transferred to the RN destroyers. That gave him the taste for fighting the small ships and even though he had other tours Queen Elizabeth and he kept going back to the smaller warship. After World War One Walker specialized. While the surest way to high rank was command of cruisers and then battleships, Johnny Walker specialized in anti-submarine warfare. Very few RN officers chose that path in the 1920s and 1930s. Even the benighted FAA was more popular than that field. This decision almost cost him further service. Still a commander in 1939 as an expert in an ignored field, he was slated for early retirement when World War Two erupted.

White Ensign Models 1/350 German F Lighter armed & Armoured Escort Barge Kit (K3564)
During the second world war, Germany's ports came under heavy attack from marauding Patrol Boats. German Lighters or powered barges were pretty much defenseless against them. In an attempt the defend them, guns were mounted for self defense. But the ultimate version was this Flak Lighter armed to the teeth with two 88 mm guns, two quad 20 mm guns, two single 20 mm guns and one single 37 mm gun. These Gunboat lighters were used as escorts for their less heavily armed cousins.

White Ensign Models 1/350 HMS Abdiel 1943 WW2 Minelayer Kit (K3565)
In 1938 the Royal Navy ordered four ships specifically designed to have the size and speed to specialize in quickly laying a minefield. These were the fast minelayers of the class. The design was unique. The ships approached the size of small cruisers but in appearance looked like very large destroyers, except for their three funnels. They displaced 2,650-tons standard and over 4,000-tons at deep load. Mines are bulky and the Abdiels had to have a large size to store the planned 100 Mk XIV or Mk XV mines at designed speed or 150 mines with some loss of speed. The designed speed exceeded almost all destroyer designs. Requirements were for a ship that would do 40.2-knots on trials and 35.2-knots when loaded down with mines. The ships were given huge power plants for their size. Please note that the 9,100-ton (standard) Southampton (Town class) light cruiser had a plant that produced 75,000shp. The plant of the 2,650-ton (standard) fell only a little short of this figure at 72,000shp. This was the same output as of the Leander class light cruisers. When you place a cruiser’s power plant into a large destroyer’s hull, you will get high speeds.
