Commissioned by Napoleon to ensure that enemy ships approaching the arsenal of Rochfort would be in range of cannon on the shore or in this fort, it took 50 years to complete by which time it was obsolete!
This famous off-shore landmark has been used to house political prisoners and prisoners of war in the Franco-Prussian war but more recently featured in the fantasy TV game show "Fort Boyard"!
