One of the ships that sailed halfway round the world to their destiny at the Battle of Tsushima in 1905.
When built, she carried a full set of sails but these were swept away on modernisation in 1898. Although classed as an armoured cruiser, she remained essentially a central battery ironclad and she was hoplessly outclassed by the modern Japanese warships at Tsushima. She was torpedoed at the end of the battle and could not be kept afloat after surrendering next day. | |
