Designed to counter 12" gunned Japanese ships which were never built, the two completed ships were used as Carrier AA escorts and laid up soon after the war ended.
Alaska & Guam were completed and Hawaii was launched to clear the slip and scrapped. There were proposals to convert the two remaining ships to missile cruisers but they were too large to be economically manned. | |
