Mercator 1/1250 Wilhelm Gustloff, KDF Cruise Ship, 1938 (M528)
She was tragically sunk in 1945 whilst ferrying refugees from East Prussia to Germany with the greatest ever loss of life at sea.
Built as a cruise ship for the German Workers Front and managed by Hamburg-Sud. she was the newest ship in the fleet. When war started, she became a hospital  ship in 1939 but was soon converted to serve as a Kriegsmarin U-boat base and accommodation ship at Gotenhafen for most of the war. Having been quickly put back into service to rescue German citizens from the advancing Russians, she had loaded as many people as possible (up to 10,000) and sailed eastwards into the Baltic when she was torpedoed by the Russian submarine, S-13 and sank. Less than 1000 passengers and crew survived.
