Designed to be large enough to carry sufficient coal to be able to go to Australia and back without refuelling because there was almost no coal in the far east at that time, the Great Eastern was huge. She was never used for her intended route and had cost too much to recover her development costs. She did, however, find fame by laying a transatlantic telephone cable.
