In the early years of the 20th century, the White Star Line saw themselves surpassed by Cunard Lines and its new ship Mauritania. Management decided to build a new class of ships named Olympic. The Titanic and Britannic were both ill-fated, sinking within 2 years of launch. The Olympic, however, remained in service for 25 years. When launched in 1911 she was the largest ship in the world, with a gross tonnage of 45,328 and could carry 1324 passengers. In 1922, after being refitted for burning oil rather than coal, she set a world speed record of almost 28 knots.
