The York clas was only two members strong - York And Exeter. York was torpedoed, beached and became a loss in Suda Bay, Crete during the battle for that island.

HMS Exeter was a cruiser, with six 8-inch and four 4-inch guns, that along with HMS Ajax & HMAS Achillies forced the German Pocket Battleship Graf Spee to escape into Montevideo and later scuttle herself after the Battle of the River Plate on 13th December 1939. Exeter was heavily damaged and only repaired at the insistence of Winston Churchill. Subsequently she was lost in action with the the Japanese at the Battle of the Java Sea on 1 March 1942.
