Both modified Leander class cruisers with 8 x 6" guns, Ajax and Achilles, along with Exeter, forced the German Pocket Battleship Graf Spee to scuttle herself off Montivideo, Uruguay after the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939. The first major naval engagement of World War 2.
