Bravo Delta 1/96 HMS Upholder WW2 U Class Submarine Antics Special

Antics' superb limited edition model of the British WW2 U class submarine HMS Upholder, famous for fighting patrols from Malta. Hand crafted from solid mahogany and hand painted this is a superb model for the warship or submarine collector. The model is mounted on a polished wooden plinth with a brass name plaque supplied and it is also provided with a display case. No more than 20 will be made.

The small U-Class submarines, with a displacement of around 630 tons, were built before and during WW2, with a class total 49. Designed as unarmed training vessels to be used as anti-submarine training targets, the first three boats, Undine, Unity and Ursula were ordered in 1936. During construction six torpedo tubes were added and most the class were also fitted with a 3-inch deck gun. Twelve additional boats were ordered as WW2 broke out, but the external torpedoe tubes of the initial boats were dropped due to their excessive bow wave signature. Most of the class served with the 2nd Submarine Flotilla based at Malta, with 19 lost, 13 in the Mediterranean and the remainder in the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean. One, HMS Untamed, was salvaged and reconstructed to be recommissioned as HMS Vitality.

HMS Upholder was commanded by Lieutenant-Commander Malcolm Wanklyn who was awarded a Victoria Cross for his attack on a well protected convoy, sinking the Italian liner Conte Rosso on May 25 1941. Sadly Upholder was lost in April 1942, having carried out 24 patrols and sinking over 115,000 tons of shipping. The enemy had been denied fifteen crucial supply ships as well as three U boats, one destroyer and possibly a cruiser.
