The GATO class submarines were one of the most successful weapons systems of the U.S. Navy during World War 2 with an enormous range and good armament.

In addition to its long range and seaworthiness it was principally characterised by its heavy armament: 10 torpedo tubes, a 12.7 cm gun and a 4 cm flak anti-aircraft gun.
